Mariemont: 'Mariemont: The Ideal Setting for Your Dreams!' [brochure] [Cincinnati Historical Society Library/Cincinnati Museum Center PAM ff917.714 M334]In the 20th Century Interactive project, Unit 3 is titled "Housing the Great Migration." Poor whites and African Americans migrated from the south to the north to such cities as Cincinnati and Dayton during the first half of the 20th century. While they were seeking a better life and equal opportunity, they often conditions as harsh as those that existed in the south. And while not as overt, they discovered discrimination existed even in the northern cities.

In this unit, Students will explore some of the roots of, and responses to, racially based housing discrimination in the urban north, and propose ideas for remedying such discrimination.
